Knowing what to write, writing and life

    Life

Do you ever sit and not know what to write about? You want to sound interesting but you keep thinking of other things you should be doing?

I’ve been sat here for the last hour with Google doing anything but this blog post.  Researching Brexit and mortgage rates being one of them.  Conclusion, no one has that crystal ball to really know what the UK economy will look like next week. There are predictions which suggest I have no need to worry but it’s all a bit uncertain.  To me, Brexit is the unknown.  Why do I have piles of tins in my cupboard?  Answer Brexit… that’s the answer I gave my husband anyway, truth – tinned tomatoes are cheap, easy, healthy and versatile.

    Writing

    So, what about my writing?

Procrastination issues today and I’m struggling to get started.   Not knowing what to write doesn’t help.  Yes I really must make a list.

I’ve finally submitted my Paranormal Anthology story, (which is why I didn’t write a blog post last Tuesday. I was busy editing, fixing and typing).  I haven’t dreamt about it yet, which is good because it was scary.

I’m not a huge horror reader, though I do enjoy Stephen King. I’m currently reading Clive Barker’s – Imajica at the recommendation of Willow –  a fellow blogger.  It’s a huge book which right now I’m struggling to get into.  However, it sounds good.

I need to get back to my Time warp novel. I’ve left it too long now and I need to write the end. I read that  Stephen King  said that you should write your first draft in three months and not stop.  He was right, where I was optimistic and the story was flowing, I stopped.  I’m now struggling to get back to it.

    My blog’s

Trying to keep up with posts and sharing, I feel like I’m sinking.  Lying in bed last night I was reading through the Word Press reader. I know there are so many blogs that I’m missing.   Writing both my blog’s is not just the posts. It is interacting with the blogging community.   Thank you to all of you that support me. I feel I’m playing catch up at the moment. I might always feel this way.

    My reading

For the last week, Saturday 18th till Sunday 26th January I have been reading Debra Purdy Kong’s, Casey Holland books.  I’ve been carrying my Kindle, so I could grab any minute I could, to catch up with Casey.  Book six is due out on the 12th February and is available for pre-order.  I’m looking forward to reading it.

I bought the children Kindle e readers last weekend.  They have read more in a short space in time then they ever have. I’m hoping the novelty doesn’t wear off.  I’m also hoping that all the books I bought them, do eventually get read.  They have loads.

    Facebook Live

At the moment, I’m having a wobble in confidence.  For now, I’ve taken a break from it.

Lessons learnt from the last few weeks

    1. Keep writing your first draft until you write ‘The End’. Otherwise you might loose momentum.
    2. A draft – short story or novel can take many drafts before it is perfect.
    3. It is a necessity to have people comment on and read your work before you submit it anywhere.
    4. Try not to let people’s comments hurt. As writers, I’m sure we are going to receive plenty of negative comments on our work.
    5. Follow your heart, only you know what is really right for you.
    6. I still need to make a list of possible blog posts to help me plan what to write.

    Today

Sat here now, yawning, I’m enjoying the peace around me.  All to soon though, I need to collect the children.

The temptation on a day off, to go back to bed is high.  Writing this blog means that I can’t do that.  I need to sit here at my kitchen table and construct a post.

I have recently found the pleasure of fruit in natural yogurt.  This year I’m making more of an effort to achieve more then five a day. Trying to add 80g of fruit to my morning yogurt seems a good idea to me.   This was made for my eight year old’s lunch box, he has said ‘yuck’ and refused it.  My six year old has now helped me eat it – Strawberries and yogurt.  (It tastes nicer then it looks).

    yogurt

Tonight I’m adding Cauliflower to mashed potato and cheese, an extra vegetable eaten.  I am trying to have a daily banana or an apple.. This will be the year that I make the effort to eat healthy.

I can get away with eating chocolate and biscuits till I’m sick, but the sugar is not doing me any good.  I need to practice what I preach.  This one might be a hard resolution to keep.

So, how do you know what to write? how far in advance do you plan?  I need to attack my pretty notebooks and have a constructive blog planning session.  Just life always gets in the way, and I guess it always will.

    Distraction and writing procrastination

    Writing

When I’m sat trying to relax in the evening, I’m good with distraction and procrastination. With the knowledge that I should be writing, it feels like  a fail when I can’t write.

I think there are times when we need to take a break. Though these last few weeks I feel I’ve taken more breaks from writing, then actual writing.

Life does get in the way, maybe it is meant to.  As a mum of two, trying to run the household life can be exhausting.  Where is the time to write? When is the time to relax?

    Puzzles

After reading some reviews I bought my children puzzles for Christmas. These were not their only present, but for some reason I thought they were a good idea.  It seems that some eight year old children enjoy completing 1000 piece puzzles.  Mine said “wow, so many small pieces” and then watched me build them.

So, here I am, two weeks in and the Disney Princess has pieces  missing, yes, I have searched my daughter’s room and the lounge where it was made.  I’ve now emailed the manufacturer.  I really do not want to have to destroy and then rebuild it.  This is the first big puzzle I have put together in years.

However, puzzle building has been a break from writing, or has it just been a good distraction?

    Distraction

Yes, I am easily distracted.  There are things I should be doing but they are not getting done. Looking around me, I need to tidy again.  Most of the stuff belongs to the children.

How do you get a child to tidy?  Threats don’t work and bribery doesn’t work.  I’ve tried everything.  The windowsill in our lounge seems to have become her art studio.   One day I will repaint it, but for now it’s covered in pen that I can’t remove.

The washing is once more dancing around the washing machine and I’m thinking about clothes that need putting away.  My daughter can get them out and throw them around her room, but folding them neatly and placing them back in her drawers, she will refuse.

A few nights ago, she went to sleep late after tidying her room.  This proves that she can tidy, but it’s when she chooses to.

I keep reading that parenting teenagers is harder than parenting smaller children.  I visited a house yesterday with a toddler. Her attitude reminded me of my six-year-old.  Are girls harder than boys?  My daughter knows what she wants and will put up a fight till she gets it. I hope that her feisty determination does continue, however I’m not looking forward to the feisty determined teenager.  “Yes, mum I am dying my hair purple and yes I am wearing this skirt”. I see battles and arguments ahead.

    Pretty Notebooks and stationary

My distraction and procrastination led me this morning to look at pretty stationary.  Do I need to keep an A6 notebook in my car? Just in case I get a good writing idea. I stood for ages trying to decide.  Taken in by how pretty it was.  I finally put it down and asked myself, how often do I get good ideas when I’m driving?  In the past I have texted myself ideas.  This has worked, so do I need a new notebook? Answer, no.

A few nights ago, browsing Amazon, I saw a pretty A4 pink hard back notebook that I really had to have.  Will I use it as I plan too?  I’m not sure.  It might join my other pretty A5 notebook.  It sits by my bed, I haven’t written in it in weeks.

Why am I not using my notebook?

A good question.  I’m led again by distraction, my children, life.  I’m tired and I love my bed. After the end of the day the television shouts at me to just turn off my brain. Sometimes I battle with myself to turn on my lap top.  There are nights I will open the document and just stare, not knowing what to write. Does anyone else do this? I have the intention to write and then don’t.

I might also cuddle my pretty note book and pen, and an hour later find I have written nothing.

Does anyone else have these issues? Trying to write, but so distracted by life around you and your own exhaustion that no writing happens?  Just continuing to procrastinate.

    Future planning

I decided last week that I need to plan my topics for this blog in advance.  I am struggling to do this.  I’m not an expert at anything.  I’m just a mum trying to write.  Does anyone have any good ideas?

My other blog (Just muddling through life) has my fiction writing and poetry.   I could write about my characters in my novel, but I’m a long way from finishing it.  By the time I’ve redrafted it for the last time, my characters will have changed and developed.  I’m still working on the logistics of my time machine.  One day I might write a post on that, but I have research to do first.

I’m now going to get some food. I’ve been enjoying my alone time this morning and all too soon I will need to collect the children. All to soon this house will be noisy and the children will be generating more mess.  Maybe by writing I am procrastinating on the inevitable need to tidy, again. All part of the fun and challenge of being a mum.

    My aspirations and writing journey

Have you ever had aspirations? Then thought, I will never be good enough?

I have, plenty of times. One aspiration I had years ago was to be a school teacher. I even did a university degree at evening classes to fulfil this goal. The truth was despite passing the degree, I do not have the confidence to teach a class of children. So that dream was abandoned.

    My journey as a writer

It was towards the end of 2017 when I didn’t get the promotion that I wanted, that I started to have aspirations about writing. I have always loved books so could I write? I opened ‘Microsoft Word’ on my tablet and started writing the first pages of my novel ‘Rosie’. Reading it through it was good, making me think, I can do this.

Writing requires hard work and dedication, but it is also cathartic. With the daily stress and the then pain of rejection, being creative, really helped to lift my mood.

    Timeline and writing prompts

It was on a Facebook writing forum in early 2018 that I met a writer in the same City as me. Late at night discussing my then work in progress. A year later, she invited me to a writing group which has helped me immensely.

It was October 2018 that I decided to start my first blog. Initially it was a free Word press blog but by Christmas I made the decision to go self hosted with Lyrical Host. It has evolved, at the start it was a journal of my daily struggles with my children. It wasn’t long before I found Blog Battle. A writing prompt every month, to write a one thousand word story.   It was later that I found Grammys Grid which gives a sentence prompt once a month. The blogger has the first week of the month to submit it. I then found ‘Write the story’ on Facebook, Writers Unite! linked to their website –  Writers Unite!, which is a photo prompt. I try and complete these every month to help develop my writing skills.

I also write poetry and sometimes about my children. Often the children will be mentioned in my poetry.  I have always enjoyed writing it. In my loft I have an exercise book with poetry.  I was a teenager when I started, but I’ve written more since October 2018 then I ever have.

I started this blog in June 2019 to try and document my writing and aspirations, but I’ve realised I need to be planning the subject in advance. The writing prompts I’ve found, are appropriate to my other blog, (www.justmuddlingthroughlife.co.uk).

I have also done Reedsy writing prompts, I’ve never won anything but they are good writing practice.

    My works in progress

I’ve read many times the phrase, ‘To be a good writer, just write and carry on’. I tell myself that I can do this.

My first novel, ‘Rosie’ is at 30 000 words in Scrivener. I have research that I need to do that I’m not ready for. It is a crime novel, I have phoned a prison for advice and they were helpful, but I feel that ‘Rosie’ might be a second book , not my first.

I am currently working on My Time Tunnel novel. It is 70 000 words and I know that a Sci-fi needs to be about 100 000 words. However, the first draft is mainly telling, not showing. Once the ending is written and I have redrafted it numerous times, I’m expecting the word count to change. Though I’m sure there’s a lot that will be deleted as well.

    My plans for 2020

As a writer I know that I need to be submitting my work to more places. I read recently that we should be aiming for one hundred rejections a year. This is eight to nine submissions a month, which is alot of writing.

On one of my writing forums, they have shared the scary statistics of rejections against acceptances. These are excellent writers and their acceptance scores are low, which highlights how hard it is to get something published.

Writing is not an easy skill and certainly not an easy profession to be successful in.

    Why do I write?

I write, because I enjoy it. After all the stress of being a mum, wife and going to work, writing helps me relax. I try and do it for me, when people read my blog and enjoy it that is an added bonus. It also tells me that I am doing it right, I am progressing.

Attending my writing group and meeting with other writers face to face helps. We have all struggled, have questions, have aspirations, all writers need feedback on their work. I am now learning the skill of critiquing others, which helps me develop too.

As writers we all have the desire to see our work published. Some try for traditional publishing, and submit work to literary Agents. Others go straight to self publishing. I dream of a traditional publishing deal, but I’m aware that one day I might need to invest in my own editor and self publish like many others.

The world of publishing is a hurdle for me to one day cross. For now, I’m focusing on learning the craft of writing. Learning how to write well and show more then tell. There are many books on it, but we need to be able apply what we have read.

    My advice

If you are a new writer, have aspirations, and are struggling to know what to write, then word prompts, sentence prompts, photo prompts are all very helpful. If you are thinking of starting a blog then you can start one free on Word Press. Some people keep their blogs free, others like me choose to go self hosted.

I know that if I had not started ‘www.justmuddlingthroughlife.co.uk’ I would be writing less today. I’m sure over the last year my writing has improved and this is with trying to write daily.

    My reading

They say a writer needs to read. Making time for reading is vital. My aim this year is to complete at least twelve to fifteen books. I finished my first last night, (G.X.Todd – Survivors) yes, started last year, so maybe cheating, but I’m going to make an effort to keep my Goodreads account up to date as well. I need too stay motivated.

    To conclude

My writing journey continues. I’m a novice as I’ve been writing properly for less then two years but I’m learning through experience which is important.

Good luck with your writing journey and your aspirations.  It is a long road for all of us, just keep on going.
