    Long time no post

    I’m back

Looking back through my blog I can see I last wrote here two years ago.  Life has taken over and got busy! When I started writing my book , I hoped to be published by now.  Complications of life, family  children all have priority over my ever busy schedule.

    My writing

So hoping to get back into it properly. I am now sat typing on my phone while watching my two children swimming.   I had hoped to write something today but the house and my daughters messy bedroom took priority.

So what am I up to?

Still writing www.justmuddlingthroughlife.co.uk I have written this month for BlogBattle, and the writers Unite photo prompt.  I am also helping two children now 10 and 12 with their homework and any issues.  Plus working and being an active mum.   We are also walking as much as possible trying to raise awareness and fundraise for Pancreatic Cancer since losing my dad in November 2020.

    My book

Still in draft form my book about an ordinary house wife given an unbelievable job, one that will change everything, is sat in my one drive at about 75000 words.  It needs a complete rewrite now and looking over again.  Some people have said this is an impossible task with work and children. I’m starting to agree with them.  However if I don’t finish it then my story will not get read.  I need to finish it.

    Momentum and routine

I think routine is important and with work and everything I lost this.  I need to get it back.

Any suggestions on how I do this? I need to keep going and push on through, but when my children need me then they come first.

Have any of my readers managed this?  Written a book with the demands of a young family? First time I’ve written a blog post at the swimming pool on my mobile phone.

I will just keep going as best as I can.

Life, fundraising, walking and writing challenges

When life let’s you down, how do you bounce back? This right now is my life, the worst thing happened to me last year, I lost my dad to Pancreatic cancer.  After losing someone so special how do you pick yourself up and carry on?

Needing to focus on my writing, I’m not getting very far.  It’s amazing how priorities blur when the hardest things in life happen. Many times a day I cry for my dad, he’s not going to answer me, but I hope he can hear me.  I believe he is with me but I’d really love a proper two-way conversation which I know won’t happen in this life.

There are things I need to achieve this year, quite a few of them my dad would have helped me with. Getting myself in the right place to do them is now added to the challenge of 2021.  A year ago, I was worrying about COVID, that worry is nothing in comparison to the pain of now.

    Fundraising

We cannot bring dad back but we can help raise awareness of this terrible illness.  Dad was gone within 12 weeks of diagnosis and he suffered greatly.  My family (myself, my children, two sisters and their children) are now walking in dad’s honour, raising awareness and raising money for research into this awful disease.  I’ve read that only two percent of the cancer research budget goes to Pancreatic Cancer.  Money donated to Pancreatic Cancer UK goes directly into research into pancreatic cancer.  Knowledge of it hasn’t changed for the last forty years hence many people are diagnosed at stage 4 and too late.  The average survival rate once diagnosed, I’ve read is about three months without chemotherapy.  Dad like many was too weak for chemo and his passing was hard.

Here is the link to my Just giving page, if you would like to donate, any size donation would be gratefully received.

Today on day 46, I’ve walked about 255 miles, my children (age 7 and 9) have walked about 117 miles.  They are aiming to walk 200 miles in 100 days and are halfway there.

We have set up a Facebook page – Walking for Grandad following our fundraising efforts and to raise awareness of this awful disease.  if you are interested please do follow along and help support our efforts.

    Facebook live

Here is my Facebook live video from 5th March

    My writing

Next month my western story will be published in an Anthology.  I read it to my dad a few hours before he died.  I left out some of the shooting as awkward to read to a dying man, but once I finished it, he moaned a little.  He was attached to a syringe driver but I’m sure he heard it, I just hope that he liked it.

I’m now needing to start work on a fantasy story.  I’ve never written a fantasy before. There is also a competition I would like to enter. With commitments to work, to my children and now walking I’m often too tired to read and write.

Sometime this year I want to get back to my novel but I need to focus on it properly. It needs a full redraft so despite being about 75000 words there is many hours of work left to do.

    2021

With all the stress around 2020 and all the pain,  I’m focusing on my family and the future. We started walking on February 13th, we’ve already covered a huge distance, keeping up the momentum is the next challenge.  I would love to get to 500 miles in 100 days but the long distances I’m walking take me away from my family and my writing.  It’s good therapy, I listen to music and take in the open country around me.  It gives me something to aim for, but staying motivated is going to be hard.  Walking seven to eleven miles alone is obviously quicker and easier then walking with a 7 and 9 year old. The furthest they have walked so far is 8 miles, so they really are doing well.

I’m hoping 2021 is more positive then 2020, it really has been a rotten, tough year.

So, how is life with you? And how are your writing plans going?

February snow, life and writing plans

    Snow in February

Here we are at the beginning of February, snow is around us and it is freezing cold.   People on Facebook are commenting on how slow January was, to me time as usual has raced.  The nightmare of last year continues and my brain fog is not giving up.  My writing has slowed down as daily Netflix has taken over. Worries over my children and visiting my patients, then memories and pain over losing my dad.  Guilt over the time I’m spending with my children, then fears of not doing enough.

With two children obsessed with computer games, getting them out for a walk normally is difficult.  Add on losing Grandad, a global pandemic and not seeing school friends they need encouragement and support.  They made the snow blob pictured and then came back in the house to their games.

The last few weeks I have supported my nine-year-old with his maths, pestered both of them with their reading and started star reward charts.  In this situation, how do you get through it?

    The year

My sisters, nieces and nephew are walking miles, they are raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.  Me, I feel I’m wading through my own despair, trying to juggle life and failing.  I’ve decided that I need to join in and walk, but not sure where I’m going to find the time.

My father was always here for me and would always fix things.  I’ve been trying to solve the dilemma of buying a solid pine chest of drawers in a pandemic.  Reading that companies won’t deliver upstairs to the bedroom raises complications.  My dad would have fixed the old one and done a fantastic job.  There wasn’t much that my dad couldn’t do, he was pretty much perfect.

Shifting the stress of the last year is not easy. How do I stop watching Netflix?  This week its ‘How to get away with murder.’  I should be reading and writing.  I should be getting earlier nights.  Too much has happened this last year and now in February, the rubbish times just continue.

    Life

The drama just keeps coming and every week day is the same.  Spending my day on the phone trying to help and support.  I’m enjoying the time alone and some of the patients I could happily chat to for longer than time allows.

As the world slowly gets vaccinated things should be getting easier.  Many people are still dying and people can still catch the virus and though not be seriously ill, can still pass it on. We all need to get through this together and try and follow the rules.  I’m hoping that this year we will be able to relax around friends and family.  Teachers and NHS can now self-test, there are debates around the accuracy of the lateral flow test.  This then causes some further stress of whether they trust them or not.  All our judgements and actions affect us.  Do we take the dog for a long walk or take the children to the park? Should we meet a friend?  Do we hug them?  Can we hug our parents?  We all play a part in this and it has been hard and will continue to be!

    2021

I’m struggling with my writing and my mind is foggy.  The last few months have been awful. Focusing on work, a distraction from what has happened.  As Alexa scrolls photos I’m frequently reminded that my dad is no longer here. Last weekend I found the garden fence broken, I’ve propped it up with the kids broken trampoline.  My dad would have fixed it as he also would have fixed my nine-year-olds broken chest of drawers.  He was a really good man

My mum has told me that she has seen my dad since he died.  She has seen him in the bedroom and spoken to him in the kitchen.  She asked him to blow in her face, feeling a cold draft, she is convinced he was there.  Has anyone else experienced communicating with a loved one after they’ve gone?  I’m feeling a bit jealous as I want to see him or a sign.  I haven’t even seen a Robin.

    Home-schooling and school

As a keyworker my children have been to school this lockdown.  I’ve felt grateful that they are being taught, a weight lifted. Yesterday because of the snow my car was going nowhere. Both children were moaning at the prospect of walking in it.  I then read that school was open for childcare only, which led me to keep them home.  A day of phoning patients, with two children shouting, messing around and playing on their computers.  On receiving a call from school, the day got more stressful.  My son had missed his maths lesson despite the school doing childcare only.

So, after an exhausting Monday, with work still to finish, I found myself supporting my nine-year-old with his Algebra.  He had never done algebra before so he did well, but I got confused with brackets.  Reading through the weeks lessons I’m sure he will be fine, he just needs to not panic.  He worked out the sums in his head, I used the calculator to check them.

Looking at the February weather forecast, tomorrow is supposed to be better. I’m hoping that the children will safely return to school.  My seven-year-old has achieved nothing for the last two days.  Today my son attended his first teams meeting., hopefully tomorrow he will be sat in the classroom.

    Plan’s

I’m trying to get my head around my goals and stay focused.  Life hasn’t been normal for a year now.  Maybe I need to stop punishing myself with all the things and writing I want to achieve.  I can’t keep up and right now the children need to come first.  My writing is happening late at night when I’m already exhausted.  I’m trying my best to keep a level head and perspective on everything, and write my stories for the two fiction blogs I contribute to, Blog battle and Writers Unite. February is already racing by and I can’t keep up.

So how are things with you?
